The Rice Dreamer: Finding Her Way Home
Share

For 27 years, the life of Lanie Engle followed a rhythm familiar to millions of OFWs: wake up, work, send money home, repeat.
From a glove factory in the Philippines to a factory in China, and finally to Hong Kong in 1999, she built a life around survival. “It’s a struggle,” Lanie shares, her voice carrying the weight of decades spent away from home. “But still, we’re standing.”
Now, after nearly three decades abroad, Lanie isn’t dreaming of a quiet retirement. She’s dreaming of rice!

A Dream Planted Early
Lanie’s business idea isn’t something she found online or saw in a trend report. It’s a dream rooted in the soil of her childhood in Iloilo City, Philippines.
“I always wanted to start that bigasan,” Lanie says, her eyes lighting up. “Since I was in the Philippines, I saw the cycle. During harvest season, rice is cheap. Farmers sell it quickly because they need money, but then they struggle again before the next harvest.”
Lanie watched her parents and neighbors trapped in that cycle. The dream formed then: to buy palay during the harvest, store it, mill it, and sell it as rice—creating a buffer for farmers and providing affordable, quality rice for her community.
“It’s not just to earn,” Lanie explains. “If you can support the small farmers, make their struggles a little less hard… even a little bit, it will make them happy.”

The Scariest Question: “Where Do I Start?”
Like many OFWs, Lanie had the dream, the motivation, and was building the savings. But the “how” remained a mystery.
“I enrolled in a lot of activities before—cooking, dressmaking. I have a lot of certificates,” she laughs. “But the main problem was how to start and where to start.”
She knew how to do things, but not how to build a business around them. “I know how to cook, but how to sell it? How to put it in the market? Where should I start?”
That’s when she discovered HelpBridge on Facebook.

From “It’s Complicated” to “I Can Do This”
Lanie immediately joined HelpBridge. Her first reaction? “I was a little bit shocked. Can I do this?”
But something was different this time. “After some time, I realized I can do this.. one step at a time.” The structured templates, the step-by-step guidance on business planning, budgeting, and marketing—it was the business map she’d been missing.

“In my previous seminars, I never encountered that. It was a big help to really understand.”
The moment of clarity came gradually. “You keep on going and going, and then you realize… it’s actually simple. HelpBridge helped me understand what I was learning, what it was for. It was a big change!”
More Than a Program—A Path Home
What makes Lanie’s journey special isn’t just her dream, but her mindset. At 63-years old, an age when many would think of slowing down, she’s preparing to launch.
“I don’t want to just grow old and do nothing. It’s not healthy at all,” she says firmly. “A worker who stops working will become weaker. Constantly moving keeps you active and healthy.”
Lanie has subscribed to HelpBridge+ and continues to gain ongoing access to templates, resources, and a community that feels like family. “I have all the support I need with HelpBridge+,” she says. “It motivates me a lot.”
Lanie’s confidence has transformed. “Before, I was really scared. I didn’t know where to start. Now, if I go back home, I’m quite confident.”
